FAQ

I installed TOGE and the store looks empty. Is something broken?

No. A theme carries only its layout and sample copy. Products, photos, menus, pages and metafields are store data, so a fresh install shows grey placeholder drawings where your content will go. Follow the setup guide from §2. The first four steps take about ten minutes and already make the store look finished.

Can I use the photos from the demo store?

No. The demo photos are licensed only for the demo, and Shopify themes cannot ship media. Use your own photos, or photos you hold the rights to.

Do I need to write code?

No. Everything in the setup guide is done in the Shopify admin and the theme editor. You can edit the theme code if you want to. Note that code edits are not carried over when you update the theme to a new version, while theme editor settings are.

How do I replace the mountain logo on the home page?

The mountain mark is TOGE's own logo. In the theme editor, open the Hero section and turn off "Logo on image" to hide it. To use your own logo there, replace the drawing in snippets/logo.liquid. Your header logo is set separately in the Header section.

The color tiles show the wrong photo.

Each color tile uses the photo of that color's first variant. Give every variant of a color the same photo. Portrait photos at 4:5, for example 1080 × 1350, fit best. If your color option is not the first option, set "Color option position" in the Product page section.

The size chart or the fabric chapter does not show.

These parts appear only when their metafields are filled in. Check that the namespace and key match the guide exactly, for example spec.size_table (§6) and story.fabric (§7). The name you give the metafield does not matter, but the namespace and key must match.

The announcement bar does not appear.

The bar shows the newest blog post with the toge.announce metafield turned on. Create the two blog post metafields in §9, then turn the flag on in a post. If a visitor closed the bar, it stays closed in their browser for seven days, or until the text changes.

Search suggestions do not show while typing.

Search suggestions use Shopify's predictive search. Shopify does not support it in every store language yet. Japanese is one of them. Search itself still works: press Enter to see the full results.

"Tax included" is not shown next to prices.

The theme shows the tax note only when your store includes tax in prices. Turn this on under Settings → Taxes and duties.

Which languages does the theme support?

The theme's labels and the theme editor come in English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Korean. Your own content, such as products and section text, is translated with Shopify's free Translate & Adapt app.

What image sizes should I use?

Most photos are shown at a fixed shape and cropped to fit. The image size table lists the shape and width for each place. Larger is fine: Shopify resizes images for every screen.

The top of the product page shows a plain product shot.

The big photo at the top is meant to set the mood, like a photo of the product in use. Add it to the product's custom.hero_image metafield, or set "Main image" in the Product page section. Without either, the product's first photo is used. See §6.

Can I show one product on the home page?

Yes. In the theme editor, add the Featured product section to the home page and pick a product. It shows the product's photos, options, price and cart button, and you can add app blocks to it.

Do I need any apps?

No. TOGE works without apps. Translate & Adapt is needed only to translate your content into more languages, and a subscription app only if you sell subscriptions.

Where do contact form messages and newsletter signups go?

Contact form messages go to the store's sender email address. Newsletter signups appear in Customers, with the newsletter tag and email marketing turned on.

Can I change how the checkout looks?

The checkout is not part of the theme. You can set its logo, colors and fonts in Settings → Checkout, in the checkout editor.

How do I update to a new version?

When a new version is released, Shopify shows an update notice on the theme in Online Store → Themes. The update keeps your theme editor settings and content. Code edits are not carried over, so note any changes you made before updating.
